Web

Incomplete

Some Web features have not been fully documented and/or are under active development. These topics do not have a page yet:

  • Datamodels and Relationships
  • Arranging an application with windows, dividers, and tabs
  • Saving, opening, and including Layout files
  • Tables and trees
  • Realtime panels and processors
  • HTML panels and forms
  • Heat maps, 3D surfaces, and maps
  • Scripting an application with callbacks and custom methods
  • Users, Sessions, and administration in the Web

The Web is the visualization layer of 3forge Enterprise, where you build and run the Layouts that make up an application. Front ends can also be built in React, Angular, notebooks, or Excel, fed from the same platform over WebSockets, REST, and other technologies; this page covers Layouts built in 3forge itself.

Architecture

The Web is both a server-side process that hosts user Sessions and a browser-based interface through which users interact with their applications.

When a user logs into the Web, it creates a Dashboard associated with that user Session. The Dashboard represents the user's running application. Its resources, such as visualizations and underlying data transformations, are instantiated from a Layout file.

See the Key Web Concepts table below for a brief description of key Web concepts.

Note

Multiple users can load the same Layout, but each Session gets its own independent Dashboard instance and server-side state.

Key Web Concepts

These are the core Web-specific terms encountered when developing in 3forge Enterprise.

Concept Description
Session A user's active connection to the Web, holding their identity, Session variables, and an associated Dashboard.
Dashboard The running application instance for a user Session.
Layout The .ami file that defines a Dashboard's structure and resources.
Window A top-level container within a Layout that defines the structural framework of an application.
Tab A named subdivision of a Window for organizing Panels into discrete sections.
Divider A horizontal or vertical split within a Window or Tab for controlling Panel arrangement.
Panel A visual unit placed inside a Layout's structure, e.g: tables, trees, charts, custom HTML, and more.
Datamodel The processing layer that queries, transforms, and delivers data to Panels.

In this section

  • Styles & Themes — StyleSets, shipped theme families, per-user theme switching, and programmatic or AI-assisted theming from a single brand color.
  • Charting — plots, layers, renderers, and composed visualizations built against a live datamodel.

Building outside 3forge

If you prefer your own front-end stack, the same platform feeds it: the client interfaces (Python, ODBC, Excel RTD, C++) and the Gateway cover the programmatic and BI paths.
