Charts¶
Known issues
Some chart features have known issues in the current release. See Known issues.
A chart is a panel that draws the output table of a datamodel as bars, lines, points, slices, or shapes, and redraws when the datamodel's data changes.
Overview¶
Each chart is made of 3 kinds of part:
- Plot: the drawing area. A chart starts with one plot and can hold a grid of them, side by side or one above another.
- Axis: a scale along one edge of a plot. A horizontal axis belongs to a column of plots and a vertical axis to a row, so plots side by side share their vertical axis.
- Layer: one set of shapes drawn in a plot from a datamodel's table, such as bars, a line, pie slices, a legend, a crosshair, or an annotation like a reference line. A plot can hold several layers, each bound to its own datamodel and table.
Charts are created from the visualization gallery, which offers each chart type as a tile. Some tiles are single chart types, such as "V Bar Chart" or "Pie Chart". Others are templates, such as "Candlestick" or "Waterfall", which build several layers at once from the columns mapped to them. Both kinds are edited the same way once placed. See Chart types for every tile.
A chart reads its data from a datamodel. The gallery can create the datamodel from a table as the chart is built, or use one that already exists. Building datamodels in general, and linking panels with relationships, are covered in the Datamodels section. Placing a chart beside other panels in a window is covered in Arranging an application.
Charts can also be built and changed from AmiScript, and by an agent over MCP. See the AmiScript reference and Building charts over MCP.
Heat maps and 3D surfaces are separate panel types, offered on the gallery's "Grid" and "3D" tabs, and are not covered in this section.
Features¶
- Chart a table in one wizard: pick a Center table, run its query, choose a chart type, and see a live preview before the chart is placed.
- Choose from 23 chart types and templates: bar, line, area, scatter, pie, speedometer, candlestick, waterfall, boxplot, Gantt, funnel, Sankey, and more, each offered as a tile.
- Combine several layers in one chart: overlay a line on bars, add a second axis, or stack several plots in one panel.
- Mark values on the chart: draw reference lines, shaded bands, boxes, text, and images at data values or at fixed positions.
- Read exact values: show hover text on each data point, or turn on a crosshair that snaps to the nearest point.
- Keep charts live: a chart on a datamodel subscribed to a Center table redraws within about a second of each insert, update, or delete.
- Script and inspect charts: read and change layers, axes, and plots from AmiScript, export a chart as a PNG image, and check what each layer drew with its render stats.
- Follow a walkthrough for each chart type: each walkthrough builds one chart, such as a candlestick of daily prices or a waterfall of a profit bridge, from a small table you can copy, in the gallery or over MCP. The bar chart walkthrough also covers "H Bar Chart".
- Build charts from an agent: create base charts and templates over MCP; for a template, the reply shows which column was mapped to each field.
In this section¶
- Quickstart: a bar chart of totals by symbol, built from a table
- Chart types: every gallery tile, the fields each one maps, and the data shape each template needs
- Creating charts: the visualization gallery, field mapping, live preview, and starting from a table or a datamodel
- Layers: adding, ordering, and editing the layers of a chart, and the fields each layer draws from
- Plots and axes: adding plots and axes, axis ranges and formats, bar order, and grid lines
- Legends and annotations: legends, reference lines, bands, text, and images
- Crosshair: a crosshair that follows the pointer and shows the nearest values
- Colors and style: color modes, the chart's style options, titles, and the Style Manager
- Charts that update live: which datamodels redraw a chart when their data changes
- Using charts: for people using a chart someone else built: zooming, hovering, and filtering by legend
- AmiScript reference: the chart classes, callbacks, PNG export, and render stats
- Building charts over MCP: the chart tools, their replies, and making an agent's chart editable
- Troubleshooting: messages and symptoms, with the cause and fix for each
- Chart type walkthroughs: one chart of each type, built step by step from an example table
