Using Charts¶
Known issues
Some chart features have known issues in the current release. See Known issues.
This page is for people using a chart in an application someone else built: zooming in, reading exact values, showing only some series, and selecting data.
Prerequisites¶
- An open application with a chart. None of this needs Editor mode.
Zooming in¶
Dragging across a chart and selecting "Zoom In" zooms into the part dragged over.
- Press the mouse button on the chart, drag across the part to zoom into, and release. A box marks the area, and a "Zoom In" button appears beside it.
- Select "Zoom In".
- Check that the chart now shows only the area of the box, with both axes rescaled to it.
The mouse wheel zooms too: scroll up over the chart to zoom in, and down to zoom out. Scrolling down stops at the whole chart, so it is also the way back out. While the chart is zoomed, dragging moves the view instead of drawing a box.
Reading exact values¶
Pointing at a bar, point, or slice shows its values, when the chart's author has given it hover text. Bar, line, area, scatter, and pie charts have it by default.
Some charts show a crosshair instead: dashed lines that follow the pointer, with a box showing the values of the nearest point. On a bar chart the crosshair can stop following the pointer after the second bar; the chart's author can switch it to follow the pointer freely (see Crosshair).
Showing only some series¶
A chart's legend can have a checkbox beside each entry.
- Select the checkbox of a series to show it. Every series whose checkbox is clear is hidden.
- Check that the chart shows only the selected series.
Clear every checkbox to show all the series again.
Selecting data¶
On a chart whose author has made it selectable, clicking a bar or point selects it, and the selected shapes take the selection color. Dragging a box offers "Select these N item(s)" above "Zoom In", to select every shape in the box.
